A short history of Shaner-Hoover
Shaner Bros. Oil was founded in 1947 when Carl Shaner and his two brothers Ed & George bought a small heating oil company from Fred Hogan. In 1982 the Mitchell family purchased the Shaner Bros. business and managed and operated it under that name until Robert R. Mitchell Co. merged with Christoff Oil Co. in 2002.
Hoover Gas & Oil was started by Harold A. Hoover in 1930. Harold founded a local service station and went into the gasoline business. Harold operated during the Great Depression and then went into the service in 1943-1945 during WWII. After the war Harold decided to go into the gas, heating oil, kerosene, and motor oil business which serviced local farms, trucking companies
and coal mines in addition to heating oil.
Hal Hoover took over the business from his father in 1972. Hal has been in the family business as an employee and as an owner for over 50 years. When Hal was ready to retire in 2006 he had the opportunity to sell his business to his good friends Rusty Christoff & Jeff Mitchell of Christoff Mitchell Petroleum Inc.
We are very happy about the fact that we were able to persuade Hal Hoover to stick around, and we are pleased to report that is still a valued employee of Shaner-Hoover.
